Things to know if you're coming from another country

As the Four12 Global field grows, we get more and more interest from students outside of our South African boarders. Here you'll find a few helpful guides to let you know what things will cost and your visa processes.

What you should budget for

Living in South Africa is generally quite cheap compared to other countries, but we'd love to give you an idea of what things cost.

Program Fees

  • R3 950 per month

  • $230 / €195 / AU$ 347

Our program fees are one of the items on your budget line that won't change throughout the course of your time in Altitude.

Rent / Accomodation

  • Accommodation + utilities = R5500 per month

  • $320 / €270 / AU$480

Altitude Ministry Team does not offer hosting options so if you're planning to spending a year with us, you'll need somewhere to stay.

Option #1: Oxygen Life Student House
As a church, the Lord has blessed us with an incredible property which we have kitted out to be used as a student house.
For more info regarding applications, pricing and rooms, you can use the button below.

Option #2: Renting a flat
The suburb where the Oxygen Life Church building is in, Walmer, has plenty of apartment blocks in walking distance from our building so it should be quite easy to find an affordable apartment.
A few things to note:

  • Most apartments are unfurnished, so you would need to buy things such as beds, furniture, appliances etc.

  • Generally most apartments also need you to pay for your own electricity, water and wifi usage each month. They can add up to around R1500 on top of your monthly rental amounts.

Transport

  • Car Rental: R4500 per month

  • Petrol: R2000

  • Estimated Total: R6500

  • $380 /  €320 / AU$570

Gqebera (Port Elizabeth) is a small city with no official public transport so most people have their own cars for getting around or using Ubers.

Coming from another country will most likely mean you won't have your own car. This isn't a major problem as often our South African students have their own cars and will help with lifts etc, but if you want a bit more freedom for yourself, you have the option of doing a long term rental through one of many companies here SA.

We have had students from other countries buy cars and use them for the year, and sell them before they leave. This can work out slightly cheaper than a long term rental, but insurance, finding a car, and selling it afterwards would fall on to you entirely.
